Create the account and your first container

Google Tag Manager holds the tags on your website, such as Analytics and ads tracking. You need two things: a Tag Manager account for your business, and one container for your website.

Creating them does not put Tag Manager on the site. Installing the container is a separate step. Until that install is done, the container cannot collect data.

What you'll need

  • A Google sign-in you control
  • Your business name
  • The main address of your website, such as www.example.com
  • About 10 minutes

Create the account and container

  1. Go to Google Tag Manager and sign in.
  2. Open the Accounts tab, then select Create Account.
  3. Under Account Setup, enter an account name. Use your business name. Select the country for the account. The anonymous data-sharing option is optional.
  4. Under Container Setup, enter a container name. For a website, use the main site address, such as www.example.com. You need one web container for the site, not one container per page.
  5. Set the container type to Web.
  6. Select Create and agree to the Terms of Service.

Tag Manager then shows two code snippets, one for the page head and one for the body, and a container ID that looks like GTM-XXXXXXX. You can close that window and open the install instructions later from the container ID in Tag Manager.

Installing the container is separate

The snippets have to go on every page of the live site before tags can run. That install is not part of creating the account.

Follow the Google Tag Manager setup guide when you are ready to add the snippets, or leave the install for Campaignly after you send the invite. Keep the container ID. It is the container Campaignly needs.

If you have more than one website, add another container from the Accounts tab with Create Container. Use a separate web container for each site.

If something looks wrong

You already have a Tag Manager account for this site. Do not create a second one. Open the container whose ID matches the snippet on the live site.

Create Account is missing. You may be inside a container already. Use the back arrow or the Accounts tab to return to the account list, then select Create Account.

Google’s own steps are in Create an account and container.

Next: invite Campaignly

When the account and web container exist, invite Campaignly to Google Tag Manager. Use the Campaignly email we sent you.
