What are industry benchmarks?

Industry benchmarks are average performance metrics for digital marketing campaigns across different channels and industries. Use them to set realistic goals, spot underperformance, and understand whether your campaign results are competitive.

Campaignly provides benchmark data so you can quickly compare your campaign metrics against typical ranges for Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO, and local marketing.

How to use benchmarks in Campaignly

  1. Navigate to your campaign dashboard.
  2. Select the channel you're analyzing (Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO, or Local Marketing).
  3. View your campaign metrics alongside the benchmark range for your industry.
  4. Compare your click-through rate (CTR), cost-per-acquisition (CPA), conversion rate, and other key metrics.
  5. Identify gaps between your performance and the benchmark to prioritize optimization areas.

Key metrics by channel

Google Ads

  • Click-through rate (CTR): 1.5–3.5% for search, 0.5–1% for display
  • Cost-per-click (CPC): Varies by industry; highly competitive keywords cost more
  • Conversion rate: 2–5% for most industries
  • Quality Score impact: Higher scores lower your CPC and improve ad placement

Meta Ads (Facebook & Instagram)

  • CTR: 0.5–2% depending on audience targeting and creative quality
  • Cost-per-result (CPR): Depends on campaign objective and audience size
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS): 2:1 to 4:1 is healthy for most e-commerce
  • Relevance score: Aim for 6+ to reduce costs

SEO

  • Organic CTR: 20–30% for position 1, drops to 5–10% by position 5
  • Impressions to conversion: 3–6 months typical for new content
  • Keyword difficulty: Balance high-volume with achievable targets
  • Ranking improvement: 8–12 weeks to see meaningful movement for competitive keywords

Local Marketing

  • Call rate: 10–25% of local campaign clicks
  • Local pack visibility: Top 3 positions capture 50%+ of local search traffic
  • Google My Business engagement: 3–8% CTR from profile views to website
  • Review generation: Aim for 1 new review per 20–50 customers

Important notes

Benchmarks vary by industry. A B2B SaaS company's conversion rate won't match a retail e-commerce store. Campaignly filters benchmarks by your selected industry for accuracy.

Seasonal trends matter. Holiday periods, back-to-school, and industry-specific busy seasons shift performance. Compare year-over-year data when possible.

Benchmarks are starting points. Your campaigns may perform above or below benchmarks based on budget, targeting, creative quality, and competition. Use them to ask "why?" not as hard targets.

Outliers happen. A single high-performing campaign can skew averages. Focus on median ranges and your own historical trends alongside benchmarks.

What if your metrics are below benchmark?

  1. Check targeting. Are you reaching the right audience?
  2. Review ad creative. Test new headlines, images, or copy.
  3. Audit landing pages. Ensure they match ad intent and convert visitors.
  4. Analyze campaign settings. Verify bid strategy, budget allocation, and device targeting.
  5. Wait for data maturity. New campaigns need 1–2 weeks of data before meaningful analysis.

Use benchmarks as a diagnostic tool — they highlight what to investigate, not what to copy exactly.
